Frendz, 1971

Pathé footage from the office of underground newspaper Frendz circa 1971, featuring Baroness Rosie Boycott, who’s now a member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament.

Boycott founded the groundbreaking feminist magazine Spare Rib in the year following this footage. Then in 1973, she was jailed in Thailand for 18 days for smuggling cannabis, an experience she wrote a book about in 1984. In the ’90s she was editor of the UK edition of Esquire, and in 2018 she was nominated for a life peerage (as opposed to hereditary peerage) in the House of Lords.
