Footage from the Sausalito hippie houseboat scene circa 1974. From ‘Last Free Ride’ by Roy Nolan and Saul Rouda, and starring Mary Moffett (who lived at Gate 5) and Joe Tate. The epic tall boat is the Madonna (also called the Tower) by Chris Roberts, which burned down in 1975. He also built the famous Owl houseboat, which is still standing.
An unnamed neighbor was quoted by the local paper when the Madonna burned: “Well, I was just peaking on peyote, which I had been eating all day, and just getting out of the bath tub when I heard like this huge crash, and saw this huge flame shooting out of the Tower. For a minute I thought I was having an hallucination, and then it hit me that the Tower was really burning, and I went outside and started yelling, ‘Fire! Fire in the Tower!’’’
