Charles Bronson Visits the Food Chakra, 1973

The Food Chakra was an influential health food store and cafe in Topanga Canyon run by the Center for Spiritual Studies (it’s often cited as “the first health food store in California” but that’s not really accurate). Sridhar Steven Silberfein opened it in 1970 and later created the Desert Essence skincare/toothpaste brand (now white-labeled for Trader Joe’s). He walked his guru Swami Satchidananda onto the stage at Woodstock and gathered together people like Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das for events at the CSS headquarters next to the Chakra.

Scorpio Charles Bronson checks it out in this clip from The Stone Killer (1973). It’s now the location of Country Natural Foods on Topanga Canyon Blvd.
