Dave Sheridan illustration for a 1969 article about the Occupation of Alcatraz, which kicked off 52 years ago today. Citing the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie—which said that all retired federal land was to be returned to the Indians—89 Native Americans spent 19 months living on the island and dodging Coast Guard blockades to get supplies ashore.
