1969 footage from artist Joe Tilson’s ‘Humans in a Machine World’ documentary, featuring Vashti Bunyan and her partner Robert Lewis on their 2-year, 650-mile horse-and-cart journey across Britain.
Vashti and Robert left South London in the spring of 1968 in an old Romany wagon with their horse Bess and their dog Blue. Their destination was Donovan‘s stone house commune, sometimes called the West Coast Renaissance, on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. But by the time they got there, Donovan’s planned community had effectively dissolved and Donovan was away in California. So they crossed further west to the island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, and lived in a stone barn there for about six months.
Most of the songs that became Vashti’s exquisite album ‘Just Another Diamond Day’ were written on this epic roadtrip.
