‘70s photos of the Lama Foundation in the mountains north of Taos, New Mexico, by Peter Simon (pictured in the wheelbarrow in the last photo) and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
The Lama Foundation was one of the most influential and enduring spiritual communes. Ram Dass brought his initial manuscript for what became ‘Be Here Now’ there after returning from India, and Lama residents edited, illustrated and laid out the text. It became a huge commercial hit and proceeds from its sales helped fund the Lama Foundation for years.
A catastrophic wildfire swept through the property in 1996 but it was rebuilt and still survives, and visitors are welcome in the summer.
